It’s not uncommon to hear about bands having a history as
school friends‚ but these guys take the biscuit with their
origins as choristers at York Minster. Not something you
would expect from the latest upcoming stars of the rock
scene. However with their classically trained background
you would expect something a little more sedate than the
debut offering from Elliot Minor with “Parallel Worlds”.
They obviously know their stuff in terms of musical talent
and what we have here is a bunch of guys throwing all
their musical know-how into creating a great punk/rock/pop
tune. Produced by Jim Wirt (Hoobastank‚ Incubus) and mixed
by Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy) its not surprising that the
track is riding high in the Kerrang! chart and currently
number one in “The Box” playlist.

We have an ethereal keyboard intro setting the scene
before the guitars really kick in. An orchestral feel
making sure we are aware of the classical background of
the boys. There are some superb vocal arrangements and
melodies with practically all the band lending their
voices to the track. It has a sense of urgency‚ with
punchy riffing and an almost ska feel to the first part of
the guitar solo before a true almost “power metal” series
of licks and runs.

Alex Davies vocals are clear cut and inoffensive with
added bounce and elements of the edge expected from the
likes of Billie Jo Armstrong. But where this track really
stands out is the whole combined vocal arrangement and
harmonies. I guess it’s the boys sticking true to their
chorister roots. There’s a definite saccharine quality to
the track with its sweetness but there is an underlying
punch that sets it apart from many of the rock/pop boy
bands.

Elliot Minor are finishing off the debut album at the
moment‚ and if this first track is anything to go by‚ 2007
is going to be huge. Quality musicians with a quality
single that deserves to set the world alight. Infectious
and groovesome with added punch‚ these boys are on to a
winner.
